All you have to do is browse a few birthday cards before it becomes really apparent: people have an aversion to getting older. We’re all for age-acquired wisdom and a lifetime of memories to look back on, but we also wouldn’t turn down eternally youthful skin!
Our team put together some face mask of the best DIY anti-aging facial masks recipes we love for keeping skin looking youthful. Many of these ingredients are fresh, so your skin will benefit from the high nutrient content.
How to Apply Face Mask Properly
Before applying a mask, cleanse your skin.
After you apply the mask, lay down with your feet in the air to encourage blood to flow toward your face. Surround yourself with sounds you love—classical music, ocean waves, Food Network (we won’t judge).
In general, you can leave a mask on for about 15-20 minutes, or until it dries. If it dries too quickly, spritz it with water or toner.
Rinse your mask off with warm water and use a washcloth if needed to completely remove it. Splash your face with cold water to close your pores.
After you’re finished masking, follow up with your normal toner, serum, and oil. Voila! People will be asking you whether you’re taking algebra or geometry next semester. Okay, probably not, but you’ll feel great.
5 DIY Anti-Aging Facial Mask Recipes
Don’t worry! We’re not expecting you to go forage in your backyard for herbs or swim to Atlantis to collect a mystical sand substance. We kept it mostly to ingredients you have in your kitchen, making it easy to learn how to make homemade facial masks.
Brightening and Lightening Mask
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon organic yogurt
- 1 teaspoon fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon sandalwood powder
Instructions:
If you find your skin is looking dull, mix all these ingredients, apply to your face, and leave it on until it dries. When you wash it off, your skin will look bright and refreshed! Sandalwood powder has a myriad of benefits and is of high importance in Ayurvedic medicine.
The lactic acid in yogurt helps to smooth and moisturize the skin. Massage the ingredients into your face as your rinse them off for some exfoliation.
“Caught with Egg on Your Face” Mask
Ingredients:
All you need is an egg!
Instructions:
Beat the egg and apply the mixture to your face. Once it dries, wash off for skin that appears tighter and more toned. The protein in the egg promotes beautiful, youthful skin.
The potassium preserves moisture. Riboflavin (also known as B2) can help protect from environmental stressors. Eggs are truly nourishing both for your insides and your outsides!
Remedy for Better Looking Eyes
Ingredients:
- White tea
Instructions:
Start by brewing yourself a cup of white tea. It’s best if you bring your water to a rolling boil, then wait a minute or two to let it cool down before steeping the tea. Once the tea has steeped and has cooled to a temperature your face can handle, soak a washcloth in the liquid and place the cloth over your eyes.
Your pores will open up from the heat, allowing the tea to penetrate into your skin and work its magic. White tea works to de-puff the appearance of your eyes. Because it’s also loaded with antioxidants, it’s good for the rest of your face, too!
Avocado Honey Face Mask
Ingredients:
- ½ small, ripe avocado
- 1 tablespoon of honey
Instructions:
Mix ingredients together and apply to your face. If you have combination skin, you may want to apply only to the drier areas of your face. You can leave it on for around 15 minutes, but feel free to take a nap and leave it on a little longer. For deeper penetration into your pores, warm the honey before mixing with the avocado.
Moisturized skin is the enemy of aging. The fats in avocado add moisture to your skin, while the vitamin E helps even the look of your skin tone. Honey is a humectant, meaning it binds moisture to the skin. It is also can brighten the look of your skin.
Rejuvenating Face Mask
Handcrafted Purifying Mud Mask
Firm and tighten the look of your skin naturally with this powder-to-paste clay mask. Rhassoul clay, exclusive to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, is rich in the minerals silica and magnesium. Chlorella algae provide phytonutrients, while rose clay absorbs excess oil. Each use will leave your skin feeling renewed and fresh.
This recipe from Natural Skin Care: Alternative & Traditional Techniques, by Joni Loughran.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of facial-quality clay (our Purifying Mud Mask would work perfectly)
- 1 teaspoon of instant oatmeal or oat flour
- ½ tablespoon of powdered milk
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 1 teaspoon of olive oil
- water, to achieve paste consistency
- 1 drop of any essential oil that you love (neroli, rose, lavender, or frankincense would be perfect!)
Instructions:
Mix the first five ingredients together until thoroughly combined. Add enough water to make the mixture into a paste. Add the essential oil of your choice (just a drop!) and mix until combined. Apply to your face and enjoy ten minutes of aromatherapy! Clay is rich in minerals and removes impurities from the skin.
No matter our age, skin can always benefit from detoxing! Milk cleanses and nourishes. Make sure to use high quality, organic, full fat milk for optimal benefits. Olive oil provides moisture and minerals. Honey helps bind this moisture to your skin and lends its own skin brightening qualities. The benefits from the essential oil will differ depending on which you choose, but choose an aroma you love and breathe deep to relax.
Having some natural anti-aging masks recipes allows you to whip up something fresh whenever you and your skin need a boost. Try to make time for a weekly mask to keep your skin young and nourished; however, avoid these moisturizing mistakes that quickly age your skin.

I just tried something on a hunch- comfrey root powder face mask. Mixed maybe 2 tsps comfrey root powder with enough water to make a smooth paste, applied it to clean skin, waited 15 minutes, showered it off. I looove the way it made my skin feel! Interestingly, it left a subtle slippery film on my skin which feels protective….next time I will put the root powder in a mortar & pestle & get it really smooth, as the powder is quite lumpy & it takes some doing to get it thoroughly blended with the water.
I’ve seen how well comfrey can heal injuries, so I thought, why not use it on sun-damaged skin?

I always loved alternatives to the commercial concoctions. You never know what they have to add. A favorite DIY mask of mine is a sugar scrub that can be used on your body and face. It’s only recommended you use it once a week on your face though because it is an exfoliant. The original recipe called for a teaspoon of olive oil, but I have switched to coconut oil because it is less liquidy, and we’ll stick on your face better. A teaspoon of honey and squeeze half of fresh lemon. I also started adding a few drops of vitamin E oil to it. Then, add roughly a cup of sugar, give or take, to the consistency you prefer. Mix it all together and apply. I let it set on my face for at least 15 minutes, sometimes longer if I’m watching one of my favorite shows :-). I just keep it in the shower and use it on my body for the rest of the week. I love how it makes my skin feel afterwards. Thank you again for sharing these wonderful recipes!

I like to make a mask out of ginger pwdr , honey and lemon juice. I put the leftover mask in my tea while I leave on the mask. At the same time I have the teabags on my eyes.

Yeah. What I really like about them is the active vitamins which are good for the skin. The process is also easy and won’t take too much time. I had experience with white tea and I really recommend it because of the antioxidants, if you want your skin looks younger.

Hi there. Any home recipes for fading freckles on my daughter’s face? Lemon juice on its own is too strong on her skin and burns.
Mimi
Hi,
Its very interesting to read your blog, I got lots of helpful information, thank you for that. Since very recently, I noticed that my upper eyelids are hooded. I noticed, believe it or not, looking at my pictures,,,, when I compared them with those taken just a year ago, I could see the dramatic changes… I would love to do something about it before its too late. I don’t want to go through a surgery, therefore would love to hear your valuable suggestions, anyone who knows any natural remedy, or a special facial exercise, I mean really anything, would be much appreciated!
I try to eat healthy, moderated exercise, use a good sunscreen, etc.
I feel like I need something special, focused just on this particular problem. My skin overall looks not too bad, so hooded eyes would kind of make me look old, if not taken care of.
Many many thanks!
Mimi

hey thanks for the information. i would also like to know how could i get an even skin tone. i have a lot of tanning in my whole body and especially on my face. how do i remove it?

Hi there! The best product for that is our Citrus Stem Cell Serum – http://shop.annmariegianni.com/Repair-Serum-15ml_p_189.html
It contains stem cells from oranges and aloe vera.
If you’re looking for specific ingredients, look for licorice root, aloe vera, avocado oil, vitamin C, and stem cells. 🙂

Wow ‘facial masks without harsh additives, colourants and other unpronounceable ingredients. My face says ‘thank you Annmarie’.
Leo
Thank you for the recipes. What can be used instead of clay?
admin
Hi Leo,
Perhaps you could use activated charcoal instead of clay, which also draws toxins out of the skin.

Thank u for making my skin look good using homemade to pamper my skin

Wow! Thank you for the information. About the lemon recipe, I have been exposed to a mixture of lemon juice and egg yolk. It works perfectly well and the results are amazing! However, I need to know what I can do about the skin color of my whole body. My facial complexion is lighter than my legs and the outer part of my hands. What can I do to have an even tone that match with my face on these areas?
nazish
Wat can we use instead of avocadosss..please reply soon thank u ☺
admin
Hi Nazish!
Instead of avocado, you could try coconut oil, banana, yogurt, or oatmeal. 🙂
Fawn
I have a question….how often should one use a face mask? BTW…I just love all of your products….
admin
Hi Fawn! About once or twice a week works well for most people. It depends on the harshness of the ingredients, how your skin is reacting, and whether the problem (for example, dryness) is still present. 🙂
Donna
I like to do a chocolate facial….use a big spoonful of organic cream (cow or goat both great) and some organic dark chocolate (the dark stuff is best because it has all the anti oxidants and other goodies) , melt the chocolate and mix the cream through and paint onto your face and neck. Then sit back and relax….and because its all natural you can lick the bowl !!
This really plumps the skin and makes it so soft.
Sheila Masson
Thanks for these recipes. My face is very excited about the possibilities.

Thank you for offering these special recipes!
Donna
Hi!, thanks for the mask recipes! I was wondering why the powdered milk in the rejuvenating mask instead of using actual milk perhaps instead of or in addition to the water? Doesn’t most powdered milk have the fat removed? Just curious!
Thanks!
admin
Hi Donna! Powdered milk give this mask it’s pasty texture for easy application. Soaking your face in liquid milk is a little more difficult. Powdered milk can also be more concentrated.
Thanks for reading. 🙂
Laura Brito-Hazelton

When I was a child I played in the sun with no sunscreen. I don’t think it even existed then. I would come in from a day at the lake and my grandmother would take a cotton ball dipped in whole milk and rub it all over my sunburn. I hated the smell as a child but the next morning I would wake up with no redness and no painful sunburn. I have used this technique with whole cream even today just to nourish my thirsty skin and it loves it! Give it a try!
admin
Hi Deborah! Sounds like your Grandma knew what she was doing! I love that tip.
Dottie Jean
You are absolutely right! I can’t remember ever hearing The words “sun block” when I was little. But I sure do use it today. Even though I have an olive complexion, I still use sunblock everyday. But try this first. Before applying sunblock (in the summer months only) I wait 15 minutes. I like to allow my body to absorb the vitamin D from the Sun before applying my sunblock. 15 minutes is all you need everyday to soak up some Vitamin D.
