Can your cell phone age you faster and worsen your overall health?
It sure sounded a bit crazy to me when I first heard it, but the latest scientific research is now confirming that the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by common electronics can impact your health in a negative way.
This even led the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to emit new guidelines on safe cell phone use back in December 2017.
The CDPH explained that “some scientists and public health officials believe [EMFs] may affect human health” — while agreeing that “scientists disagree about whether cell phones cause health problems and how great the risks might be”.
so… is cellphone radiation the new smoking?
25 years ago, people were still allowed to smoke in planes.
And before 2006, heart attack-inducing trans fats were not even found on the nutrition facts of food products.
History has shown us that it often takes decades before a dangerous substance or technology is finally banned or before stricter safety guidelines are finally enforced.
The question is… what should you do in the meantime?
5 Ways Your Phone Might Hurt Your Health
Being addicted to your phone to way most of us are has been linked to five main side effects:
1—Lowered Sleep Quality
Do you use your phone as an alarm clock a foot from your head? Or maybe you are one of those who fall asleep with a smartphone in hand?
Both of these bad habits will expose you to small amounts of EMFs, which have been shown to reduce your body’s production of melatonin at night. Less melatonin, less deep sleep.
In other words, sleeping near your phone (unless it’s on “Airplane Mode”) will reduce your body’s ability to detox and regenerate at night, essential steps to keep a vibrant health in our modern world.
2—Brain Cancer Risks
Did you know that cellphone EMFs have been classified as a Class 2B “possible” carcinogen back in 2011 by the World Health Organization?
Now, this definitely does not mean you should freak out and shred your phone to pieces. After all, certain pickled vegetables oddly also appear on the list of Class 2B carcinogens.
The problem is that since 2011, new scientific studies have reinforced the link between cellphone and increased risks of brain cancer, making certain researchers conclude that this classification should be changed to Class “2A” (probable carcinogen) or even to Class “1” (definite carcinogen).
Most of these risks can be easily eliminated if you create distance between your phone and your head during calls though, for example by using speakerphone or wired ear buds.
3—Fertility Problems
If putting a phone to your head can increase cancer risks, keeping it near your body all day, every day can also expose other… sensitive body parts to low-level radiation with possible long-term consequences.
In the last 10 years alone, more than 201 studies (see Nick’s latest book for the complete references) have linked EMF radiation and a reduction in sperm count and motility—important markers of men’s fertility.
If your partner would scoff at the idea of hurting his swimmers because you guys clearly have no intention of having more children… he might be interested in the fact that sperm quality is very closely linked to overall health.
A Danish investigation found that “men with the highest sperm counts enjoyed a mortality rate 43% lower than the men with the lowest counts.”
The easy fix? Hit “Airplane Mode” before carrying your phone in your pocket or anywhere near your body (sports bra, anyone?).
4—Premature Aging
Let’s face it: it’s not like EMFs can instantly kill you, or fry your brain — or else we’d all be dropping like flies.
The truth is that at first, your body can handle this stressful exposure, and heal just fine. Most people even don’t feel any symptoms at this point.
But after being exposed to EMFs from your phone, wifi, Bluetooth devices and other wireless technologies for several years, independent researchers have found that the human body starts deteriorating rapidly — triggering something they have coined “Rapid Aging Syndrome” (RAS).
According to Dr. Magda Havas from the Trent University in Toronto, Canada, the symptoms of RAS include “poor sleep, chronic fatigue, confusion, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and a host of other symptoms that doctors mistakenly treat with pharmaceuticals”.
Havas explains that most people experiencing these symptoms attribute them to aging or living a stressful lifestyle, and have become accustomed to chronic ill health. Ring a bell?
5—Poor Gut Health
Are you zapping your beneficial gut bacteria while you scroll away on Facebook or Instagram right next to your belly button?
Even though very few studies have been published on this possible link, there are very strong reasons to think EMFs might affect your digestion too.
For example:
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, Medical Director at the prestigious Sophia Health Institute, has confirmed that “the gut microbiome is not just damaged by chemicals present in food, but is directly damaged by the electromagnetic waves that we’re exposing it to.”
That’s why Dr. Klinghardt always recommends his clients to reduce their EMF exposure as they try to heal their digestive tract and regain health.
There’s also the fact that putting a phone next your head has been shown to weaken the very thin “blood-brain barrier” which protects invaders and toxins from getting into your brain, so it’s very plausible it can do the same to your delicate gut lining.
These foreign signals are also very disruptive to the delicate beneficial bacteria in your intestines (gut flora), potentially slowing down their growth — while potentially making the viruses, bacteria and other bugs that are trying to take over even stronger.
What Should You Do About It?
EMFs might not definitely been proven harmful yet, but they have definitely not been proven harmless.
The best you can do in the meantime is to adopt the precautionary approach and reduce your EMF exposure as much as possible. The following recommendations recently emitted by the California Department of Public Health are a great way to start.
1—When you talk on your cell phone, keep it away from your body by using speakerphone or wired ear buds.
2—Carry your cell phone in a backpack, briefcase, or purse; NOT in a pocket, bra or belt holster (or make sure to hit “Airplane Mode”).
3—Avoid using your cell phone in a fast-moving vehicle, or when you only see one or two bars displayed (your phone emits more EMFs when the signal is low).
4—Don’t sleep with your phone in your bed or near your head. Unless the phone is off or in Airplane Mode, keep it at least a few feet away from your bed.
5—Children and teenagers might be at an even bigger risk from cell phone radiation. Teach them to use speakerphone and use Airplane Mode as often as possible.
what about wifi? Smart utility meters? Bluetooth? Other sources of EMFs?
Cell Phones Are Not the Only Source of Potentially Harmful EMFs.
Wifi routers, Bluetooth wearables, “smart” utility meters, cell phone towers and many other wireless gadgets might also impact your health over time.
Better safe than sorry.

Great tips! Do you recommend the cell phone sleeves/covers that are supposed to block or mitigate the EMF? Thanks..
