While most of us don’t have any desire to get younger, I think many of us definitely wouldn’t mind slowing down aspects of the aging process. Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, good sleep hygiene, hydrating (inside and out) and limiting our time in the sun are just a few items on the anti-aging “to-do” list, but what about anti-aging supplements?
Supplements can be helpful in assisting us in our anti-aging efforts, through the use of specific, targeted nutrients. There are a seemingly endless number of supplements on the market today, so we’re breaking down the use cases for a few of our favorites.
1. Hemp Oil
Linoleic and oleic acids are components of hemp oil that work wonders for improving the appearance of aging skin and visibly reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Hemp oil supplements can also help reduce the visible effects of some skin rashes, fungal infections, bacterial infections, etc.
2. Fisetin
If you’re unfamiliar with Fisetin, it’s a flavonoid found in a variety of fruits. These include apples, mangoes, strawberries, kiwis, grapes, and persimmons. It can also be found in vegetables like cucumbers, onions and tomatoes and other nuts.
Fisetin is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, similar to that of certain nuts and wines. It promotes good health by decreasing ailments and extending life span. Fisetin is able to do this because of its anti-tumorigenic, anti-invasive, anti-angiogenic properties.
3. Curcumin
The main compound found in the spice turmeric is curcumin. Curcumin is used in several ways to counteract the effects of indigestion, respiratory issues, hemorrhage, ringworm, eye infections, skin bruising, and a host of other ailments.
Curcumin works hard to slow down both the internal and external effects of aging. Like fisetin, curcumin can also assist with the anti-aging process. There are several ongoing active clinical trials that are assessing the highly effective properties of curcumin.
4. Pyrroloquinoline Quinone
Pyrroloquinoline quinone is found in green peppers, parsley, and kiwi, but supplements are an easy and efficient way to add this compound to your diet. Studies have shown that pyrroloquinoline quinone has a positive effect on rejuvenating mitochondria slowing the speed of cellular aging.
Studies have also found this compound supports cognitive performance and improves memory and attention span. This occurs because the stimulated nerve growth in the brain helps protect neurons.
5. Chlorella Powder
Chlorella powder is considered a true superfood. It’s a freshwater algae that is densely packed with vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fats, and antioxidants. Chlorella research has shown that it may detox heavy metals, lower cholesterol and blood sugar, promote weight loss and boost your immune system.
6. Zinc
Zinc is a mineral helps improve the appearance of wrinkles and slows down the aging process. Research shows that “Zinc plays an essential role in many biochemical pathways. It participates in several cell functions, including the immune response. This review describes the role of zinc in human health, aging, and immunosenescence.
Zinc deficiency is frequent in the elderly and leads to changes similar to those that occur in oxidative inflammatory aging (oxi-inflamm-aging) and immunosenescence. The possible benefits of zinc supplementation to enhance immune function are discussed.” This is a commonly known supplement that is found at most drug and health food stores.
7. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, and many fruits and vegetables – kiwis, oranges, persimmons, strawberries, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower, green and red peppers, spinach, cabbage, turnip greens, and other leafy greens to name a few.
When vitamin C is used internally, the results can include an improved immune system, increased antioxidant intake, and protection against UV rays.
8. Omega-3/Fish Oil
Omega-3 is a fatty acid that typically found in fish, plants, and nuts. According to the New York Times, “higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids, the fats found in fish, are linked to a healthier old age.” Omega-3 fatty acid is vital to a developing brain and overall brain function. When your levels are low, some research shows it may speed up the aging of the brain and deficits. So if you want to maintain your brain, try a few omega-3 supplements.
9. Coenzyme Q-10
Coenzyme Q-10 “has been shown to help improve heart health and blood sugar regulation, assist in the prevention and treatment of cancer and reduce the frequency of migraines. It could also reduce the oxidative damage that leads to muscle fatigue, skin damage and brain, and lung diseases,” according to the Mayoclinic.
10. Boswellia
Boswellia contains boswelic acid and is an anti-inflammatory and painkiller that may help to prevent the loss of cartilage and may also help with treating certain kinds of cancer. It comes from the frankincense tree. Some of its uses are for treating osteoarthritis, cancer, inflammation, asthma, and to reduce the side effects of radiation therapy.
