You may have heard about acai awhile ago, when it got a lot of press coverage for its potential as a weight loss aid. Though the hype has calmed down a bit, this is still a powerful fruit that has many health benefits.
We’re excited about acai in skin care because it is an antioxidant powerhouse. That means in topical formulations, it can help protect the skin from environmental aggressors and reduce the appearance of aging. Acai also has a lot of fatty acids that help the skin look tight along with vitamins and minerals that play a key role in protecting from environmental stressors.
A little bit about the ingredient itself
Acai berries come from the acai palm tree, which is native to Central and South America, particularly the Amazon rain forest in Brazil. The fruit is about an inch long, reddish-purple, and similar to blueberries and cranberries in appearance. The seed takes up a lot of the space, however, leaving only about 10-20 percent of the berry that’s edible. The tree produces a lot of berries in branched clusters of 500 to 900 fruits. The flavor has been described as a rich mix of berries and chocolate.
Of course, the berries are a good addition to daily diet. In Colombia, acai popular drink and is also used to make desserts, smoothies, and to add to breakfast cereals.
Health benefits of eating acai
Traditionally, native people in Brazil have used acai berries to make tea that soothes fever and to heal skin conditions. They also boiled preparations of the root to treat menstrual pain and diabetes.
Acai became a major topic in the press when marketers started selling it as a weight loss aid, as a aide for diabetes and blood sugar maintenance, and other chronic illnesses. There are no studies to substantiate these claims (yet) but early research has found that acai has a high antioxidant content, and we know that antioxidants play a big role in protecting the body from today’s common diseases.
If scientists continue to study acai, they may find that it can play a role in the prevention of a lot of today’s most prevalent health concerns. Acai is high in fiber, for example, which can help maintain a healthy digestive tract and reduce stomach upset. It’s also a good source of vitamin C and ellagic acid, which is the same powerful acid found in green tea. It has anthocyanins similar to those found in red wine, which have been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and some early studies have also found that it may have anti-inflammatory properties that could be helpful in people with allergies.
Acai’s benefits to the skin
Altogether, the various components in acai work to reduce the appearance of aging on skin. There are many benefits when we break it down, but in a nutshell, acai is for anti-aging!
- Lasting effectiveness. One great thing about acai is that when the oil is processed and stored long-term, the antioxidant levels remain high. In most cases, time and exposure to light and air can gradually diminish antioxidant effectiveness in skin care formulas, but acai has proven to be resistant to this effect.
- Anti-aging. Acai is the perfect addition to skin care formulas made for anti-aging benefits. It’s a potent provider of antioxidants, meaning that one berry carries a big punch. Using it every day will likely protect your skin from environmental stressors, keeping your skin looking healthy and glowing.
- Nutrients. Acai is a good source of vitamin C, which is known to protect, firm and tighten, as well as the B vitamins and several minerals. Because of these nutrients, it shows promise in helping with sensitive skin.
- Vitamin E. This vitamin helps rejuvenate the look skin. Not only is it a strong antioxidant, but it has properties that can help firm and tighten your look. Of course, it retains moisture as well!
- Fatty acids. Acai has omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids—a smorgasbord of components that help skin appear youthful and supple—fatty acids keep revive the look of dry, dull skin. If you’re getting enough, your skin looks smooth and soft. If you’re not, skin dries out, sags, and becomes dull. Acai gives you a good dose with every application.

We don’t recommend supplements but doing a bit of research and speaking with a holistic practitioner would be super helpful for you!
