For this week’s Herb of the Week, I’d like to introduce you to Fenugreek seed.
Fenugreek seed benefits
Used in Chinese and ayurvedic medicine for centuries, Fenugreek has many health benefits.Though the leaves of the Fenugreek plant are often used in cooking, it is the dried seeds that boast the most medicinal benefits.
Fenugreek seeds have a wide array of benefits, though most often they are used as a digestive aid. Because Fenugreek seeds have a high mucilage content (meaning that the seed husks absorb water and develop a gelatinous substance), the seeds are wonderful for adding bulk to the stool. (The gel produced by the seeds is also a helpful appetite suppressant, because it helps one feel full after consuming them.)
Another benefit of Fenugreek seed is stimulating lactation. Mothers who are having trouble producing milk are encouraged to take Fenugreek capsules to increase their milk supply.
Other uses include (but aren’t limited to!): fever remedy, a natural way to induce childbirth, as a home remedy to decrease cholesterol and/or manage blood sugar levels, and as an sensuality booster!
Fenugreek seed and your skin
Fenugreek seeds are amazing when used on your skin – that’s why I included them in my Ayurvedic Facial Scrub!
When used topically, Fenugreek seeds have properties that soothe. They also contain Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant.
Have you ever tried Fenugreek seed?
Much Love,
Annmarie Gianni
